Ethical Consumerism

I thought I would add Ethical Comsumer.org to my Links List. This is an interesting site that gives you the low down on Corporate Ethics.

Here’s an example on their report on Somerfield on their Environmental Policy:-

“Primary Reference: Somerfield Group Corporate Communications:www.somerfieldgroup.co.uk (4 November 2008)
Somerfield Group did not respond to a request by ECRA in October 2008, for the company’s environmental report. The company’s ‘Responsible Retailing Report 2007’ was found on the company’s website http://www.somerfieldgroup.co.uk. This did not contain any dated and quantified future targets, and any targets that did have dates set were for 2007/8, which ECRA did not consider to show reasonable understanding of or committment to reducing the company’s environmental impacts in the long-term. The report contained no carbon disclosure, and there was no mention that it was independently monitored. As a result, the company received ECRA’s worst rating for this category.

Somerfield did not respond to a request from ECRA in June 2002 for a copy of its environmental report. A search on the company’s website (www.somefield.plc.uk) found a brief environmental statement but it did not demonstrate a reasonable understanding of the company’s main impacts, or state specific time and performance targets.

British Death Toll in Iraq and Afghanistan hits 300

From the Telegraph 13/11/08

“British death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan hits 300 after two Royal Marines killed
Two Royal Marines have been killed by an explosion during a routine patrol in Afghanistan, taking the total number of British personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq to 300. “

Yet there is a Massacre every day on our British Roads.

Is it safer in Iraq then Britain?

Ghost Bike Vandalised

I saw on Moving Target that “HEARTLESS vandals have wrecked a “ghost bike” memorial marking the spot where a much-loved cyclist was killed.

Australian James Foster, 36, died in July 2003 when he was hit by a car as he left work at Mosquito Bikes cycle shop, in Essex Road, Islington”

This is sad but unfortunately a sign of the times. Just goes to show we need more CCTV and police presence and more restrictions on alcohol and/or curfews.
