Despite the massacre on Britain’s roads not being in the headlines, I spotted a tiny article (the size of a paragraph) in a national newspaper today about a road safety campaigner who has just been killed by lawless motorist-maniac:-
After googling, I found a bigger article in the East London & West Essex Guardian:-
“A FATAL road crash has robbed a community of one of its stalwarts.
Kathleen Dorrington, 85, of Wheelers Farm Gardens, North Weald, has died in hospital just over a week after she was struck by a Range Rover, in the High Road, near Bassett Gardens.
She was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, after the crash, on January 29, and was later transferred to St Margaret’s, in Epping, where she died on Monday.
Villagers in North Weald have been campaigning for years for a zebra crossing at the spot she died which is just opposite the shopping parade.
Known as Peggy to her friends, Mrs Dorrington was a familiar figure in North Weald where she helped out at the museum, and British Legion.
Arthur Moreton, of Bassett Gardens, North Weald was a friend of Mrs Dorrington.
He said: “She was a lovely lady and will be sorely missed. She was one of the older generation who had gone through everything and was someone to look up to.”
North Weald Parish Council chairman Cyril Hawkins knew Mrs Dorrington for more than 30 years and described her as “a very happy lady.”
The 43-year-old male driver of the grey Range Rover, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail until April 30.
Any witnesses to the crash, which occurred at 10am, are asked to call Chigwell Road Policing Unit on 01279 621804″.
Essex County Council has a Tory Majority (there’s a surprise). No wonder there was no zebra crossing.
